Refining Process
The Fos-sur-Mer refinery operates a fully integrated industrial system that transforms crude oil into high-value energy and petrochemical products. The process begins in the atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, where crude oil is separated into key product families such as gases, gasoline fractions, diesel, vacuum distillates and heavy residues. These streams are then directed to specialised units for further treatment, conversion or upgrading.
Hydrotreating units ensure the removal of sulfur, enabling compliance with stringent European environmental standards and ensuring compliance with fuel specifications.
Light gasoline fractions are sent to the catalytic reforming unit, where they are upgraded into high-octane components.
Heavier fractions are processed in the catalytic cracking unit, which converts them into higher-value products such as gasoline, diesel, LPG and propylene.
Sour gases generated throughout the process are treated in the sulfur recovery unit, producing solid sulfur while contributing to the control of associated emissions.
This integrated and flexible refining scheme enables REFos to deliver products meeting required specifications while working to optimise energy efficiency and monitor environmental parameters.
